How does it work?
When you create an AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement and pay an advance amount, you get an AutoPASS ferry account.
After each ferry journey, your payment – including discount – is deducted from your ferry account.
Each vehicle must have its own tag registered against the vehicle’s registration number which is linked to your ferry account.
Private customers can link two vehicles to the same AutoPASS ferry account – Private. The size of the advance amount is calculated based on the vehicle that is in the highest prepayment price category.
Business customers can link an unlimited number of vehicles to the same AutoPASS ferry account – Business. Business customers pay one advance amount per vehicle registered in the agreement based on the prepayment price category that each vehicle belongs to.
There are three ways to pay for your journeys on ferries in the AutoPASS for ferry scheme.
1) Pay with the AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement – get a 40-50% discount
If you have a valid AutoPASS-approved tag agreement and register your tag in the additional agreement AutoPASS for ferry prepaymentagreement, business customers will receive a 40% discount and private customers a 50% discount on journeys with ferries that are included in the AutoPASS for ferry scheme.
If you have an electric vehicle, you will receive the prepaymentagreement discount in addition to the electric vehicle discount that you would otherwise receive without an agreement.
You must pay with an AutoPASS-approved tag to get the prepayment agreement discount. Upon creating an AutoPASS for a ferry prepaymentagreement, you simply register your tag number in the agreement.
On ferry connections using AutoPASS-approved tags as their payment solution, your tag is automatically read when entering the ferry and linked to your prepaymentagreement.
The cost of the ferry journey is deducted with a discount from your prepaid amount.
No discounts are given if payment is made manually on board via bank card or cash.

2) Pay with a tag and no prepayment agreement – get a 10% discount
If you have an AutoPASS-approved tag agreement but choose not to have the additional AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement, you automatically get a 10% discount on journeys with ferries in the AutoPASS for ferry scheme that use tags as their payment solution.
Your ferry journeys are then paid for via your tag agreement.
Learn more about the 10% discount with a tag agreement here
3) Pay with FerryPay – automatic payment via bank card, without discounts
Most Norwegian ferries are part of the AutoPASS for ferry scheme.
If you do not have an AutoPASS-approved tag in your vehicle, from the AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement, you can now avoid receiving an invoice and a invoice fee of NOK 35 including VAT by post after journeys on ferries included in the scheme.
Simply register your vehicle licence plate number and bank card details with FerryPay. Upon entering the ferry, your bank card is automatically charged a full-price ticket, and the receipt sent by e-mail.
You can register as many vehicles in the agreement as you wish, including vehicles you do not own but want to pay for.
FerryPay is a payment option for those who do not have an AutoPASS-approved tag in their vehicle, from the AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement, but want to avoid receiving an invoice and a invoice fee of NOK 35 including VAT by post after journeys on ferries included in the AutoPASS for ferry scheme. The scheme includes most ferries in Norway.
By creating a FerryPay agreement and registering your vehicle licence plate number and bank card details, your card is automatically charged a full-price ticket for the ferry journey, and your receipt is sent by e-mail.
You can register as many vehicles in the agreement as you like, including vehicles you do not own but want to pay for.
The agreement does not provide any discounts on ferry journeys.
AutoPASS tags
If you wish to receive a discount on ferries that use the AutoPASS tag as their payment solution, each vehicle in your agreement must have its own AutoPASS tag.
If the vehicle does not have an AutoPASS tag:
If the vehicle does not have a tag, you must order one from a tag issuer. You must then register the new tag in your AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement via My Page.
If the vehicle has a tag:
If you are creating an agreement or want to add a vehicle to an existing agreement and the vehicle already has an AutoPASS tag or EasyGo tag, the system will normally find the tag number automatically when you enter the vehicle’s registration number.
Within 1-2 weeks, you will receive the AutoPASS tag by post. However, you can register the tag number on your AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement after just 1-2 working days.
Value cards
Value cards can no longer be used. In order to still receive a discount, you need to register for an AutoPASS for ferry account.
Frequent user cards
Frequent user cards can no longer be used. In order to still receive a discount, you need to register for an AutoPASS for ferry account.
Ferry cards are being phased out as a means of payment on Norwegian ferries and are currently only used on five ferry connections. Therefore, most travellers will not need a ferry card. Only regular users of these ferry connections will be eligible to apply for a card.
If you are eligible for a ferry card, please send us a request via our contact form, including your customer ID, licence plate number, name and address, and we will send you one. If you have more than one vehicle registered to an AutoPASS for ferry agreement, please inform us which vehicle/vehicles you need a ferry card for.
Each ferry card has a price of NOK 50.
The customer is responsible for ensuring that their information in the agreement is correct at all times.
Updates in vehicle data, personal data and tag number do not happen automatically and must be reported by the customer either on My page or by contacting our customer service.
Important exceptions:
- Change of surname must be reported to our customer service.
- The owner of the agreement cannot be changed except in the event of the owner’s death. The listed heir in the probate certificate can then take ownership of the agreement by contacting our customer service with the necessary documentation.
You can terminate your agreement on My Page. When you are logged in, choose “Terminate agreement” in the menu on the right. If there is a positive balance on your account, it will be refunded to you after 21 days (please allow extra time for transfer to foreign bank accounts).
Vehicles
Each vehicle must have its own tag registered against the vehicle’s registration number which is linked to your ferry account.
Private customers can link two vehicles to the same AutoPASS ferry account – Private. The size of the advance amount is calculated based on the vehicle that is in the highest prepayment price category.
Business customers can link an unlimited number of vehicles to the same AutoPASS ferry account – Business. Business customers pay one advance amount per vehicle registered in the agreement based on the prepayment price category that each vehicle belongs to.
If you have an electric car, it must be registered as a regular vehicle in your agreement. You do not need to do anything more than this. You will automatically receive an electric car discount when traveling on ferries in the AutoPASS for ferry scheme.
In addition to this, you will receive a 50% discount (40% for corporate customers) if you have a valid AutoPASS for ferry-agreement, or a 10% tag discount if you do not have an AutoPASS for ferry-agreement and are paying with a tag.

Motorcycles, mopeds, ATVs, 3-wheel motorcycles and snowmobiles can create an AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement.
The vehicles cannot have an AutoPASS tag physically attached to them, and can therefore be registered on an AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement without acquiring and registering a tag. For ferry connections that use the AutoPASS tag as a payment solution, your ferry account is charged by taking a picture of the vehicle’s registration number as you enter the ferry.
In your agreement, such vehicles must be registered in the prepayment price category “0-8 meters”.
No extra charges are made for additional equipment such as trailers or sidecars on these vehicles,.
Electric bicycles and other electric vehicles that are not subject to registration under the Road Traffic Act travel for free.
If your motorhome is less than 8 meters, it must be registered as prepayment price category 1.
If your motorhome is more than 8 meters, it must be registered as prepayment price category 2.
If your motorhome is between 6.01 and 8 meters, but you plan to have a trailer, bicycle rack or anything that will increase its total length to more than 8 meters, it must be registered as prepayment price category 2.
The following prices have been determined by Norwegian authorities:
- Prepayment price category 1 (MC and vehicles from 0 – 8 meters): NOK 2,000
- Prepayment price category 2 (vehicles from 8.01 – 17.50 meters): NOK 9,900
- Prepayment price category 3 (vehicles over 17.51 meters): NOK 18,700
Vehicles less than or equal to 6 meters and/or weigh less than or equal to 3501 kg
If you have a car that is less than or equal to 6 meters and/or weighs less than 3501 kg, the vehicle must be registered as prepayment price category 1 even if you occasionally have a trailer or caravan that makes the length exceed 8 meters, as the total length will then be measured and priced accordingly upon entering the ferry.
Prices are as follows:
- Passenger car with trailer, total length less than or equal to 6 meters: passenger car fare X 1
- Passenger car with trailer, total length less than or equal to 10 meters: passenger car fare X 2
- Passenger car with trailer, total length from and including 10.01 meters: passenger car fare X 3
This also applies to electric cars, but the electric car price will then be X 1, 2 or 3.
PLEASE NOTE: On the ferry connection Flakk-Rørvik the fare is not calculated like this – the fare is priced only on total length: 0-6 metres, 6,01-12 metres, and over 12 metres.
Vehicles over 6 meters and/or weight over 3501 kg
If a vehicle that is more than 6 meters and/or weighs more than 3501 kg has a trailer, it must be registered in the prepayment price category it belongs in when at its longest.
Example 1: If you register a vehicle of 7 meters as prepayment price category 1, and then enter a ferry with a trailer that increases the total length to or over 8.01 meters, you will not receive a discount.
Example 2: If you register a vehicle of 5 meters but with a weight of more than 3501 kg as prepayment price category 1, and then enter a ferry with a trailer that increases the total length to or over 8.01 meters, you will not receive a discount.
Example 3: If you register a car of 5 meters, but with a weight of or more than 3501 kg, as prepayment price category 1, and then enter the ferry with a trailer that increases the length to or over 8.01 meters, you will not receive a discount.

In the same way as for ordinary vehicles, prices per ferry journey for tractors and heavy equipment are set in accordance with the individual ferry connection’s current regulations and price per journey.
Tractors and heavy equipment with a registration number and permission to drive on public roads can create an AutoPASS agreement and get an AutoPASS tag. They can therefore also create an AutoPASS for the ferry prepayment agreement and receive a 40-50% discount on ferry journeys.
Types of heavy equipment that do not have a registration number cannot create an agreement, such as wheel loaders. These must pay for a full price ticket based on the length of the vehicle either by cash or bank card.

Discount with AutoPASS tag WITHOUT AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement:
AutoPASS customers with a valid AutoPASS tag, but without an additional AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement, receive a 10% discount on ferry connections that accept the AutoPASS tag as a payment solution.
Discount with AutoPASS tag WITH AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement:
Prepayment provides the following discounts on ferry journeys:
- 50% discount for private customers
- 40% discount for business customers
- 17% discount for foot passenger tickets on the ferry connections that offer this
EXAMPLE: If a private customer’s ferry account contains NOK 2,000 in advance payment and the full price of a ferry journey is NOK 70, the private customer, who will receive a 50% discount, will only be deducted NOK 35 from their ferry account. The remaining amount in the ferry account is thus NOK 1,965.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
To receive a discount, the vehicle must use the payment solution that the ferry uses. Most Norwegian ferries only provide a discount if you use a tag.

When you create an AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement and pay an advance amount, you get an AutoPASS ferry account. After each ferry journey, payment – including discount – is deducted from your ferry account.
Prepayments can be made in the following ways:
- Invoice by post (with added fee)
- Invoice by email
- eFaktura (private customers only)
- EHF (business customers only)
- Credit card (business customers only)
About eFaktura
When paying an invoice, private customers can create an eFaktura agreement in their online bank. Business customers cannot create an eFaktura agreement. For customers with eFaktura, the invoice will come with a due date, but the due date can be changed to an otherwise preferred date. The eFaktura is sent with a due date because a withdrawal date is required by the bank.
Receiving a new prepayment invoice
When the balance on your ferry account is down to approximately 25% of the advance amount, you will automatically be notified with a new invoice.
Useful information
If you want to make a new prepayment before you receive a new invoice, you can use the KID number on an old invoice. Business customers can also top up their prepayment account with a credit card via My Page. Remember that you must pay a minimum of one advance amount.

Receiving a new prepayment invoice
You will automatically be notified with an invoice to top up your ferry account when your prepaid amount is down to approximately 25%. You can pay this invoice whenever you want, but to get a discount it must be paid before the balance reaches zero.
Useful information

There may be several reasons why you have not received the AutoPASS for the ferry discount.
- Your ferry account is empty and is blocked until we have received a new prepayment.
- AutoPASS for ferry has blocked your agreement due to inactivity. Get in touch with our customer service to reactivate your agreement.
- The tag number or the vehicle’s registration number is registered incorrectly on the agreement.
If you travel on a ferry that accepts the AutoPASS tag as a means of payment and you have a valid tag agreement with the tag issuer, the vehicle’s registration number will be read automatically when entering the ferry and linked to your tag agreement. Your ferry journey will then be settled on your tag agreement with only a 10% discount on your Journey.

After you have made your paument, contact our customer service to reactivate your agreement.
EPASS24 handles invoicing and debt collection of unpaid ferry journeys made by foreign vehicles on behalf of AutoPASS for ferries. Inquiries regarding invoices from EPASS24 must be directed to them. Contact their customer service by calling +46 8 663 54 00 or go to epass24.com.
The price of the ferry journey is settled on your AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement when the journey enters our systems, and not when you board the ferry. You will receive a detailed receipt for Your journey, price and discount on My Page.
If you travel by ferry without a tag, ferry card from a prepayment agreement or a FerryPay agreement, the vehicle’s licence plate number is automatically read upon entering the ferry and connected to the vehicle’s owner for invoicing. The vehicle’s owner will receive a full-price invoice by post, including a invoice fee of NOK 35 including VAT .
Most ferries in the AutoPASS for ferry scheme only accept AutoPASS-approved tags as a payment solution, whether you travel with just a tag agreement or register your tag in the additional AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement. If you do not have a tag in your vehicle or do not have a FerryPay agreement allowing for automatic payment by bank card, an invoice with an invoice fee of NOK 35 including VAT will be sent by post to the vehicle’s owner.
However, some ferry connections only accept payment via ferry card, or via bank card/cash/other payment solutions. Some connections also charge foot passengers (persons travelling without a vehicle).
Please contact the individual ferry connections if you have any questions about their payment solutions.
The ferry connections that do not accept payment via tag are:
- Fogn – Judaberg – Nedstrand – Jelsa
- Breistein – Valestrand
- Florabassenget
- Kaupanger – Frønningen
- Ortnevik – Måren – Nordeide
- Mekjarvik – Kvitsøy
- Hofles – Geisnes – Lund
- Ølhammeren – Seierstad
The rule that gave sports clubs and organisations the right to pay for several vehicles with the same discount-providing value card on the same ferry journey, was removed from the National Regulation For Ferry Rates on 1 January 2019.
When renewing your AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement, the AutoPASS tag will generally be introduced as a means of payment. The new rule is that each vehicle must have its own AutoPASS tag, and sports clubs and organisations must therefore arrange maters so that the vehicle owner can be reimbursed for documented expenses for ferry journeys.
Senior/disabled/blind/deaf and blind travellers pay child fare, also unofficially called senior fare, on ferry connections that still accept foot passenger payment. No further discounts are given.
The scheme includes:
- a) persons over 67 years of age
- b) disabled persons who have a disability pension in accordance with the National Insurance Act of 28. February 1997 no. 19, paragraph 12.
- c) persons who are blind
- d) persons who are deaf and blind
e) a spouse who travels with a person who is entitled to a ticket in accordance with points a) b) or c).For registered partners in accordance with the Partnership Act of 30. April 1993, a discount is given on the same terms as spouses.
f) persons travel for free who are traveling with a person who can present an identity card on which the municipality has confirmed that the person needs one or more companions. This applies to travel both with and without a car.
If a companion is the driver of the vehicle, that companion is included in the price for the vehicle for which the ordinary price of the ferry journey must be calculated.
Anyone requesting child fare/senior fare must identify themselves with a valid identity card. Valid identity cards for people over the age of 67 include passport, driver’s license, bank cards and the Posten Norge (Norwegian postal service) identity card.
Conscripted persons (corporals and privates) pay child fare on ferry connections that still accept foot passenger payment. No further discounts are given.
Child fare for conscripted persons applies to journeys on national road ferry connections.
A letter of conscription or the Armed Forces’ identity card must be presented to obtain a child fare ticket.

In line with the Norwegian authorities’ guidelines on infection control during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was decided to stop manual payment on ferries to avoid the spread of infection between ferry employees and passengers.
Instead of manual ticketing, a photo is taken of the vehicle’s registration number and full price invoice is sent to the vehicle’s owner as registered in the Vehicle Register.
If you are registered as a lessee in the Vehicle Register, we will send an invoice directly to you. If you are not, the invoice will be sent to the leasing company.
If you have received an invoice that you believe is incorrect, please contact us on +47 55 30 00 00 or via our contact form.
We invoice the person who is registered as the vehicle’s owner in the Vehicle Register on the date that the ferry journey took place.
For questions regarding the following matters, please contact the individual ferry operator directly:
- Departure times
