Change in ticketing methods due to COVID-19

For questions regarding the following matters, please contact the individual ferry operator directly:

• Departure times
• Operational messages (delays, cancellations etc.)
• Price of individual ferry journeys
• Manual payment for ferry journeys
• Refund of remaining balance on old value cards and frequent user cards

From 1 October 2021, VAT has increased from 6% to the ordinary 12%, as ruled by the Norwegian Parliament.

Payment methods

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ferry journeys will mainly 1) not be possible to pay manually (AutoPASS ferry card/ bank card/cash) and 2) be free for all vehicle passengers and foot passengers.

Payment by AutoPASS ferry card or by bank card/cash

Although manual payment was resumed on 6 April 2021, most ferry connections that would normally accept payment by AutoPASS ferry card/ bank card/cash have chosen not to accept manual payment, and instead continue to use image recognition of the vehicle’s registration number. This is a temporary measure during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Payment by AutoPASS tag

On ferry connections that use the AutoPASS tag as a payment solution, no changes have been made as a result of the pandemic.

Exceptions for manual payment and passenger payment

Some ferry connections have as of 6 April 2021 chosen to accept manual payment by AutoPASS ferry card, bank card and cash, and require passenger payment. These are:

  • Fogn – Judaberg – Nedstrand – Jelsa
  • Breistein – Valestrand
  • Skei – Gutvik
  • Florabassenget
  • Kaupanger – Frønningen
  • Ortnevik – Måren – Nordeide
  • Mekjarvik – Kvitsøy
  • Hofles – Geisnes – Lund
  • Ølhammeren – Seierstad

Payment with and without a discount agreement

Travellers who have a discount agreement with AutoPASS for ferry and/or a road toll company will receive their discounts in accordance with these agreements. Travellers who do not have a discount agreement must pay full price for each ferry journey, and will receive an invoice by post with an invoice fee. Passengers who do not have a discount agreement can avoid an invoice by post by creating an agreement with FerryPay, in which the traveller’s bank card is automatically charged a full price ticket per journey.

On ferry connections that do not accept payment by tag or ferry card

On ferry connections that do not use the AutoPASS tag or AutoPASS ferry card as a payment solution, the vehicle’s registration number will be registered by camera or be registered in writing by the ticket collector on board. An invoice is then sent by post to the owner of the vehicle.

The Norwegian Parliament has approved the processing of necessary personal data in temporary regulations on ferry payment.

Prices and prepayment

For 2024, Norwegian authorities have set the following prepayment amounts:

  • Prepayment rate group 1 (vehicles from 0 – 8 meters): NOK 2,000
  • Prepayment rate group 2 (vehicles from 8.01 – 17.50 meters): NOK 9,900
  • Prepayment rate group 3 (vehicles over 17.51 meters): NOK 18,700

From 1 October 2021, VAT has increased from 6% to the ordinary 12%, as ruled by the Norwegian Parliament.

On all national road connections and most county road connections, the AutoPASS Regulation for Ferry Rates has been implemented. Exceptions that are still ticketed according to the National Regulations are:
